This collection consists of title abstracts (often including maps) from many parts of New Mexico, particuarly Bernalillo County, dating from the late 1800's through the 1970's. The collection is divided into 2 series: Series 1 consists primarily of title records from the additions and subdivisions of the city of Albuquerque; and Series 2 consists mostly of the rural tracts of land in New Mexico, organized into divisions by county and township. Records indicate passage of land ownership through sale and inheritance as well as land and city development. Many of the records apply to rural tracts of land particularly those listed as the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District and certain land grants such as the Atrisco Grant. The company which held the majority of the records in the collection changed names and ownership several times including the companies: Albuquerque Abstract Company, Albuquerque Abstract and Title Company, Albuquerque Title Guaranty Company, Bernalillo County Abstract & Title Company, New Mexico Abstract and Title Company, New Mexico Title Company, Allen Title Company, Allen Abstract & Title Company, First Title Guarantee and Trust Company, Rio Grande Abstract Company, Rio Grande Title Company, and Western American Title Insurance Company. Most of the records from outside Bernalillo County originated in smaller towns and in companies located in these towns. The records included in this collection were owned by the Lawyers Title Insurance Corporation, but the original abstract research was not necessarily done by them.
